Hacked

Last week I was enjoying a nice little break from the internet–mainly because something about our internet broke. When I finally resumed my internet addiction I attempted to add code for the Great Australian Internet Blackout to the footer of my Bad Mummy template and found some new and interesting script.

Turns out while I was gone some pathetic arse hacked my site!

I’m hopeful that I’ll be able to salvage some of my previous posts and comments, but I’m not sure how much and when that will be. Right now I’m really pissed off at myself for not keeping better backups because that would save my bacon. What I’d like to say right now is learn from my stupidity.

  • Keep your software up-to-date.
  • Keep frequent back-ups.
  • To be entirely honest, I’m feeling really discouraged and can’t help but wonder if this isn’t as gooder time as any to call blogging quits.

Oh noes! That’s a sucking suck Bec. Argh!

Whatever you do, I hope you won’t give up blogging forever. Because you are an awesome writer.XO

    2. Veronica says:

      Don’t quit.

Have you tried google reader to recover your content? It would be a lot of copy/pasting, but the writing should still be there.

Also, a plugin called WP database backup – it sends you daily/weekly backups of your blog to your email.

    3. Deb says:

Oh no! I admit my basic feeling is “I don’t need security because no-one would bother to hack me” but I second WordPress database backup. That’s terrible, I hope you feel better soon.

    4. I wondered about that when I received an rss email for the standard “This is a post”

As Veronica said, WP Datatbase Backup plugin is brilliant http://ilfilosofo.com/blog/wp-db-backup/ I have it set to automatically email me a copy of the database backup every week. You’ll need to tell it to include your uploads folder as well. Plus you’ll need to save your theme files manually.

What version of WP were you using? I know 8.4.2 had some serious security issues and a lot of sites were hacked, thought they’d fixed that with the updates though.

Deb, people don’t ’select’ a site for hacking – they run a script that pulls sites automatically and hacks it.

Don’t give up now…. I’ve only just found you!
